Visual Communications Classes

Get practical visual communications experience starting your freshman year

The Visual Communications program at Brown College features three different paths to help prepare students for the various career opportunities available in the visual communications industry. There is an Associate degree in Visual Communications for those looking for a fast-paced education to help them prepare for entry-level career opportunities, a graphic design emphasis for those interested in print media, and a multimedia emphasis for those who want to communicate electronically.

Whatever your passion, Brown College offers Visual Communications classes to help you pursue it. The following is a partial list of classes in our Visual Communications program:

Illustration

In illustration you can learn to dig deep in order to visually portray meaning in new and original ways using a variety of media. Students in this Visual Communications course have the opportunity to create conceptual illustrations that reflect the concepts and emphasis of editorial and collateral materials. Students are also able to communicate ideas through the development of storyboards.

Graphic Design

This Visual Communications class involves the conscious manipulation of design elements and space in order to create well-planned design solutions. Students have the opportunity to learn to organize using various grid formats including but not limited to symmetrical, asymmetrical, vertical and horizontal and to explore various applications of the golden section.

Corporate Identity

This Visual Communications course introduces students to conceptual thinking and practical application as it applies to corporate identity. This includes the idea process of identifying target audience, designing an appropriate corporate identity, and logotype for business use. Students study company logotypes and build a company brand and logotype from nothing.

Presentation Graphics

(Graphic Design Emphasis only) This Visual Communications class provides students with an overview of the presentation modes used by graphic designers. Implementing both traditional and electronic methods, students will have the opportunity to gain proficiency in presenting design concepts to peers and clients.

3d Animation II

(Multimedia Emphasis Only) This Visual Communications course builds upon VCA 327 3-D Animation I. Topics covered include the creation of articulated characters, parent-child relationships, complex animation, multiple camera angles, lighting, Boleans, and other advanced techniques. Syncing animation to audio are also discussed. Concepts and aesthetics in 3-D design are emphasized.
