In conjunction with your general education courses, you can expect to learn in a variety of medical assistant classes offered at Brown College, including:

  • Healthcare Computer Applications – In this Medical Assistant course, students explore legal and ethical issues in healthcare delivery. Students engage in ethical discussions surrounding patient needs, respecting families, and appropriate communication.
  • Medical Law and Ethics – This Medical Assistant class is designed to teach students a general overview of computers and related information technology. There is a strong emphasis on data entry, communication and practical skill development.
  • Clinical Procedures – This course focuses on the examination of medical procedures commonly used in medical offices. Students in this Medical Assistant class can expect to study how to prepare and position patients, document patient histories, and how to set up and use equipment.
  • Medical Lab Procedures – In this course students can expect to learn essential laboratory assisting skills, microbiology and urinalysis. The techniques of collecting and analyzing specimen for a variety of lab tests are also included in this Medical Assistant course.

Medical Assistant Externship

In addition to the required curriculum, students in Brown College’s Medical Assistant degree program have the opportunity to gain real-world experience through a Medical Assistant Externship. In the externship, students will work with healthcare professionals to build practical experience and gain confidence in their field.
