Game design is a much more complicated process than many students realize when they first enroll in a game design school. To help prepare students for career opportunities and help them determine which area of game design they are interested in, a game production school should feature a balanced curriculum, with classes in three different areas:
If a game design school focuses too much on one area, students could enter the workforce under prepared. For example, a program that features too many practical classes without enough foundational ones usually produces graduates who are only capable of shoddy work, while a program dominated by technical classes can produce graduates who are unable to plan and work in teams.
The Game Design and Production degree program at Brown College features a balance of practical and technical classes. After a firm foundation in design and planning is established, classes also feature a wide variety of individual and team projects. Students receive personal attention and instruction from instructors with experience in the gaming industry.
