Brown College Students Find New Way to Pay for School

Turn Love of Fishing into Cash for College

Mendota Heights, MN (August 10, 2008) Brown College students, Arielle Tetzlaff and Adam Odegaard competed as teammates in the Under Armour College Bass National Championship as a way to raise money to pay college tuition. The tournament was held in late July near Little Rock, Arkansas. The duo competed against Big Ten schools such as the University of Illinois, Purdue, and Virginia Tech. Although the students didn't end the tournament in the upper ranks of the 50 competitors, they had some memorable experiences throughout the competition and Tetzlaff scored bragging rights as the first female to ever compete in the tournament. At Brown College, Tetzlaff is studying digital photography while Odegaard is studying game design.

Unlike some of their competitors in the South where fishing is heavily supported-teams like Virginia Tech had fancy boats with motors to match-Tetzlaff and Odegaard had to do some negotiating to get a 1998 Bayliner, a vehicle to tow the boat, gas, and to cover other expenses. The young turks successfully got through that, only to have their boat not start. If that wasn't enough, the anglers were beat out for the last good rental by another team whose boat had broken down. They were left with a johnboat. With limited funds and very little practice time in the unfamiliar surroundings of Lake Maumelle, it's a wonder they were able to get through it at all.

The stretch of unfortunate events has done little to dissuade the young sophomores. They are currently recruiting new members into the Brown College Bass Fishing Club, fixing the Bayliner, acquired a reliable truck to tow the boat, and are continuing to look for more patrons to help with competition expenses. A number of sponsors of the Under Armour and other national champions offer tuition assistance to tournament winners as a means of driving the number of young participants.

Both grew up fishing but agree that Odegaard is the more experienced of the two. They like to fish and need to pay for school-so what could be better then to combine the two? And make no mistake, this is not a temporary gig for Odegaard, he looks to one day turn pro.
