Medical Assistant, Pharmacy Technician and Health Information Technician students participated in a service learning project in the Summer Games for Special Olympic Athletes at Stillwater High School in Stillwater Minnesota, June 20-22, 2013. Students conducted health fair screenings which included vital signs, waist circumference, body mass index and provided health information on topics such as taking medications properly, general nutrition, ways to exercise, and water and sun safety for Special Olympic Athletes. For three days, Brown students - under the direction of Medical Assistant Chair Chris Wichelman, Medical Assistant Clinical Coordinator Melissa Iverson and Pharmacy Technician Chair Wesley Usyak – actively supported over 570 Special Olympic Athletes and provided health information for their personal wellbeing. It was a great chance for students to apply their clinical and patient care skills to the general public at this amazing event!
