Did you know that former U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel, President Obama’s nominee for Defense Secretary, is a graduate of Brown College?

Hagel earned a certificate in broadcasting from what was then the Brown Institute for Radio and Television in 1966, before serving in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. The school became part of Career Education in 1995.

After returning from Vietnam as a decorated veteran, the Nebraska native worked as a radio newscaster and talk show host in Omaha from 1969 to 1971 while earning a bachelor’s degree in history at the University of Nebraska.

After a successful business career, Hagel, a Republican, was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996 and served two six-year terms, retiring in 2009. For a variety of reasons, he’s expected to face a tough confirmation battle.
